The standard we build to

We build to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, and we test against it as we go, with both automated checks and hands-on keyboard passes. What follows is our own assessment of where the site stands. It is not a certification, and no outside auditor has signed off on it.

What that means in practice

• Contrast is measured, not eyeballed

  Text that sits over a photograph is checked against the actual pixels behind each line, not against an assumed background, at 4.5:1 for body text and 3:1 for large text.

• Everything works from the keyboard

  Links, buttons, form fields, the photo galleries and the lightbox can all be reached and operated without a mouse, and the element you are on is always visibly outlined.

• Motion follows your system setting

  If your device is set to reduce motion, the site stops animating. Content appears in place instead of sliding, fading, or drifting.

• Pages are structured, not just styled

  One main heading per page, headings in order, labelled landmarks, and form fields with real labels, so a screen reader can navigate the page instead of reading it start to finish.

• Images say what they are

  Photographs that carry meaning have text descriptions. Decorative artwork is hidden from assistive technology rather than announced as an unnamed image.

• It still works without JavaScript

  Every page renders its full content with scripting turned off, and the newsletter form still submits.

Where we fall short

These are the gaps we know about. Naming them is more useful to you than claiming they are not there.

• Archive photo descriptions are thin

  Many photographs in the makeover galleries are described by their position, for example "2024 makeover, photo 3", rather than by what is happening in the frame. We are writing real descriptions as we work through the archive.

• The program video runs in a player we do not control

  Our video plays through YouTube. We do not load it until you press play, but its controls and the quality of its captions belong to that provider, not to us.

• Links leave for sites we do not run

  Donation and sponsor links open external sites. We cannot control how accessible those are.
